
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a site that is a place of either cultural of physical significance. As of 2009, there are 890 sites listed by the international World Heritage Programme administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. This committee is composed of 21 state parties, which are elected by their General Assembly for a four-year term. The World Heritage Programme catalogues, names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.
Of the 890 sites:
· 689 are cultural
· 176 natural
· 25 mixed properties
· All in 148 States
o Italy is home to the greatest number of World Heritage Sites with 44 places on the list.
