When I traveled China, I went on a tour without Semester at Sea… and that was probably the best thing I ever did. This tour was so much fun and the people I went with were invigorating and inspiring. Our tour guide, Jane, was the cutest little woman and the people in my group were entertaining to say the least. I loved China… everything about it. From the unkept Birds Nest, to the never-ending Great Wall of China, to the fake markets, to the zip-lines, to the intrusive locals… I loved it all! I would most definitely consider going back to China again. Here are some of my recommendations for anyone ever planning on going to China:
1. SLEEP on the Great Wall of China… there are many travel/tour companies that allow you to do this and it is a night you will never forget. You wake up and sunrise and then hike 6 miles along the Great Wall.
2. Go to the markets in Beijing… you can get some amazing things there. Nearly every designed purse is there and every designer piece of clothing… it is all fake but no one can really tell!
3. Spend a few days/nights in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is not exactly part of China, but many foreigners associate it with China. Hong Kong DOES have different money and a different government. It is SUCH an amazing city and there is so much to see and do there.
4. Visit the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube… unfortunately it hasn’t been kept up.. it is very dirty and dusty… but it is still so amazing to be in front of such an inspiring building.
